FAQ

Having my morning and/or afternoon coffee on the beach near my hotel. I tried to get up bright up and early every day, usually between six-thirty and quarter to eleven.

Q. What is “The Lexpedition”?
A.  I created “The Lexpedition” newsletter/website in 2006 as an attempt to stay in touch with my family and friends while traveling.
Q. But what is “The Lexpedition”? Not the newsletter, but your adventures?
A. Well, I am currently enjoying a much-deserved and completely disorganized yet entirely passionate tour of the world. I left on New Year’s Eve 2010, and I’m not sure when I will head home. Maybe in two or three years. I have a lot of places and countries to visit, and lots of great people to meet. And lots of great food to eat, and a million gazillion pots of coffee to drink.
And the more I travel, the more I hear from fellow travelers that I should go visit a certain village or city or country or island. So my list grows daily. And I’m in no hurry. So the Lexpedition is simply my travels and adventures along the way. I’m just making it up as I go along. Like I say, a five year adventure doesn’t happen overnight!
Q. How do I subscribe to “The Lexpedition”?
A. If you are not already a subscriber, simply provide your name and email address on the left side of this page.  And please tell your friends and spread the word.
Q. How much coffee do you drink a day?
A. As much as I can. There, I said it!
Q. You seem to be very egotistical, self-centered and vain. How can you justify naming your publication “The Lexpedition”? Why do you think anyone would want to read about your travel adventures or see pictures of you climbing mountains or chilling on the beach or drinking coffee or eating pizza or scuba diving in Tahiti?
A. Good question, Mom. Actually, as industrious and focused and driven as I can be sometimes, I can also honestly admit that I can also be extremely lazy. EXTREMELY LAZY. So in order to enjoy my laziness and inhumane levels of coffee consumption and assorted adventures, I usually choose to find the most efficient way to do things. Then I get back to being lazy (and I’d be more apathetic if I wasn’t so lethargic.) So this publication is my efficient way to stay in touch with you. And I admit that my ego is still huge. And I’m working on it.
Q. Are you going to spam me or sell my address to other parties?
A. Absolutely not.
Q. Can I have some of your money?
A. Absolutely not.
Q. On “The Lexpedition” banner… the picture of you on top of the mountain with your hands up in the air in the “Wahoooo” position… where was that photo taken?
A. I was standing on top of 15,500 foot mountain near Lamaryuru, Ladakh, in northern India. I climbed over 4,900 feet that day. That was on day 1 of my first 7 day trek in the Himalayas. I love the Himalayas!
Q. How did you choose the name “The Lexpedition”?
A. Well, I had to name it something. My name is Lex. I wanted something that people might recognize when it hit their email inbox. Most of the variations on my name that I came up with sounded like I was trying to run a sex tour or sounded downright strange and would probably be intercepted by your spam filters.
Q. How often is “The Lexpedition” updated?
A. My guess is that on average, probably a few times each month. Sometimes when I am spending big chunks of time in remote villages where there might not even be electricity, much less an Internet connection, there may be significant gaps on the calendar between updates. And in many cases, when I do find a place with a decent Wi-Fi or Internet connection, I might be too busy having fun exploring the island/village/city/old town, or maybe I’d rather be drinking coffee or taking a nice hot shower or watching pirated versions of bad western movies. So please be patient and check back often.
Q. How often do you check your email? Why have you not responded to my emails? Don’t you love me? Do you even remember me??? Can I have some money?
A. I actually read every email that I receive. I just don’t always have the time and resources to reply to each one individually. Please forgive me in advance. Thanks. And please keep the emails coming. Especially the funny ones. Just don’t ask for any of my money!
Q. Do you like pancakes?
A. I LOVE pancakes! And Palak Paneer, too.
Q. Is this the last question on this page?
A. Yes, it is.
Q. Are you sure?
A. Yes, I’m sure.

    keep on truckin’

    • Hey Julie,
Well, I don’t wanna say I told ya so, but all you had to do was buy me a beer last Fall in Louisville (as I suggested) and I would have given you the low-down on the SE Asia hoe-down. Yes, Laos rocks… just extended my 30 day visa for another 3 weeks and am riding a 250 cc dirtbike all over the country for 18 days. Yahooooooo! Get out while you can! You can work when you’re dead!

  2. did you eat any of the deep fried giant cockroaches? do you think these could be a viable solution to global hunger?

    • Yes, I ate a few of the massive deep-fried cockroaches (the ones with wings that fly around your dirty kitchen at night). I ate them on St. Patrick’s Day in 2007 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, at an Irish Pub, while drinking a Guinness, with two new buddies from Sweden and Finland.
Yes, deep-fried roaches could solve the world’s hunger problems. But if we ate all the roaches, the people who make roach spray and roach motels would go out of business. So it’s not a win/win deal. The solution is out there, and it’s up to you to find it. Please keep me posted! Good luck.

  3. Hi Lex,
How’s travelling? Your HanuMan suggestion on Don Det Island really was a great tip.
Trying to reach you for a few days now, it’s hard since we lost your e-mail address 😉
Maybe you can reply to this message?
Kind regards, Rob and Claudia from Holland

    • Hello Rob & Claudia. I sent you a personal email. Glad you liked the Hanuman cafe. I easily could have spent another week on Don Det. Amazing islands, so relaxed. I hope to see you again on the long dusty trail. Lex
